Lyman served in the New York State Militia for 19 years, 8 years as a Captain of the 24th Regiment, resigning in 1840. He had removed to Cattaraugus County, New York in 1833, and in 1846 to Waukesha County, Wisconsin, having followed his younger brother, Chauncey. In 1868 he removed to Putnam Township, Fayette County, Iowa, once again with his brothers, Hiram and Luman. It was here that Lyman worked a farm of 225 acres until his death.
