READSTOWN - Viva Ruth Pellett, 89, passed away on Wednesday, May 28, 1997, at the Sannes Skogdalen nursing home in Soldiers Grove. She was born on October 7, 1907 in Crawford County. She was the daughter of Harvey L and Elsie (Dilley) Banta, but her mother died when she was just a girl.

She married Harley L Schoville on June 12, 1925. He preceded her in death on February 27, 1956. To their union were born three sons and a daughter.

She married Gifford Pellett, son of Samuel and Blanche (Fruit) Pellett, of Richland Center on April 19, 1961. He died on September 27, 1989.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law Arlene Schoville; her granddaughter, Bonnie; her parents, including her step-mother Sadie (Savage) Banta; a brother, Robert Banta; two sisters, Dorothy Salmon and Velma Salmon; and a half-sister Helen Reuter.

Viva and Harley operated a restaurant business in Soldiers Grove for many years before his death, and she was widely known and loved throughout the Soldiers Grove area. She and Gifford lived in Richland Center until his death in 1989, where she was employed for many years in a local care center for the elderly. Later, she returned to the Soldiers Grove area and in recent years has resided with other friends in Sannes Skogdalen. She was a member of the Christian church and over the years was active in the Soldiers Grover Church of Christ and in Richland Center, Park Street Christian Church.

Surviving Viva are her children; a son-in-law; three daughters-in-law; her half brother; a brother-in-law; 14 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a great-great grandchild; as well as a host of friends. Funeral services will be handled by Sime Funeral Home of Readstown with interment in the Readstown Cemetery. Officiating at the funeral service in the Soldiers Grove Church of Christ will be their minister, Joseph Adams. Friends may call at the Sime Funeral Home from 5.00 until 8.00 pm, on May 20. The funeral service is scheduled from Saturday, May 31, at 11.00 am at the church. Memorial may be designated to the Soldiers Grove Church of Christ.
