In 1865 David Harris lost almost all of his estimated ten thousand dollars worth of personal property when he was forced to free his slaves. His dream of becoming a planter was shattered. During Recontruction he concentrated on maintaining what little wealth he had; he did not succeed. In 1872 and 1873 he had to sell land in order to pay his taxes. David Harris died in 1875; his personal property was assessed at $1,836.97 and he left just over one thousand acres. Ironically, his father, whose success he could never match, outlived him by two months. *
