Four Killed In Two-Car Head-On Crash - Slides on Curve in DuPage County

Four Chicago-area men, celebrating a reunion, were killed early yesterday in a two-car crash three miles north of Winfield, DuPage county.

Killed in one car were a Chicagoan, Donald R. Haight, 21, of 1937 Grand av.; and Pvt. John C. Frederick, 17, of Batavia road; John Lee Voris, 19, and Donald Cox, 16, of 3S551 Melcher av., all of Warrenville, in DuPage county.

Driver Is Uncertain

Police said it was uncertain which man was driving the car, which collided head-on with a pick-up truck driven by Talmage O. Walls, 25, of Town Line road, Warrenville, who suffered cuts and was in satisfactory condition in Central Community hospital in Winfield.

Walls told police he was southbound in Winfield road when the car rounded a curve at high speed and slid sideways into his lane.

Families of the victims said one of the youths was in the service, one had just gotten out, and another was entering the service this week.

Pvt. Frederick, a former student at Wheaton High school, was on leave from the marines and was to have returned today to his station in North Carolina. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur J. Frederick. The father is a printer for the Pioneer Press company in St. Charles.

Out of Service A Week

Haight, a machinist in Chicago, had been drafted and was to have entered the army Thursday. He attended Wells High school and was the son of Mrs. Verna Haight.

Voris, who had been released last week from the navy on a medical discharge, was a cousin of Haight. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hanson. His step-father operates a gas station in Warrenville.

Cox was entering his senior year at Wheaton High school. His mother, Mrs. Ruth T. Cox, works in the main Chicago office of Sears, Roebuck & Co.
