James R. Busby's father was born in Pennsylvania and mother in Kentucky. He was a farmer, carpenter, and grocer. James Robert was the only child of Madison and his second wife, Mary Ann Craig Busby. Madison was married four times and outlived three of his wives.
In the 1880 census, James R., age 25, was a farmer and was living with his grandmother, Susan Busby, age 84.

DEATH CLAIMS JAMES R. BUSBY AT AGE OF 74
James Robert Busby, 74, well known resident of this city, died at 5:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon at his home, 805 West Adams Street. His death resulted from bowel trouble. He had been in poor health for some time but had been confined to his bed only three weeks.
Mr. Busby was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Madison Busby. He was born in Shelby County, November 30, 1851. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary M. Oller in this city on September 12, 1880. Following their marriage they resided on a farm in Shelby County. About 35 years ago they sold their farm home and removed to this city, where Mr. Busby engaged in the grocery business in the building now occupied by the Mity Nice Bakery. He retired about 20 years ago.
Mr. Busby was a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, attending regularly until his illness prevented. His kind and jovial disposition made him a friend of all who knew him. Not being blessed with any children of their own, Mr. and Mrs. Busby took several children into their home and cared for them with the thoughtfulness and love of true parents, until a home was secured for them.
They reared three foster children from infancy, a foster daughter, Mrs. Wallace Price, who passed away a few years ago and two foster sons, Guy Oller of this city and Dean Lee of Granite City, who survive. Mrs. Busby preceded her husband in death January 5, 1926.
Mr. Busby is also survived by the following half sisters and half brothers; Mrs. E. N. Barnes, Greenwood Township; Miss Ellen Busby, Greenwood Township; Mrs. Brennan, Wichita, Kansas; Perry Busby, Minneapolis, Minnesota; John Busby, California; Frank Busby, Kansas and Milo and Otto Busby both of Greenwood Township.
The funeral services were held at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon at the Methodist Church. The Rev. Ernest J. Campbell officiated. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery.
