William was the son of Thomas Backus (B.A. Brown 1819), a lawyer; representative and senator in Connecticut Legislature, president of the Senate, and lieutenant governor; son of Dr. Thomas & Lydia (Lathrop) Backus; descendant of William Backus, one of five brothers who came to Saybrook, Conn , from England in 1635 and settled in Norwich, in 1660. His mother, Sarah Anna (Young) Backus, was daughter of Ebenezer Young (B.A. 1806), member of Congress, and Anna (Burnett) Young; descendant of the Rev Robert Cushman of Plymouth Colony.
William entered Brown University with Class of 1868, but in January, 1865, transferred to the Freshman class at Yale, left at end of Sophomore year and in 1868 reentered as Junior with Class of 1870. After graduation became engaged in newspaper work in Boston, at various times was reporter, night and exchange editor, special writer, musical critic, and assistant dramatic critic for Boston Advertiser; also with Boston Times for a time. In 1886 gave up his work on account of ill health and took a trip to California and Hawaii; since then had lived in Danielson, where he was a member of the Westfield Congregational Church.
