In 1869 in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, Dennis married Margaret Fitzpatrick (1848-1912), born in Ireland. They settled back in Cambria County where Dennis worked in the coal mines. This couple had nine children, all born in Cambria County:

According to a December 23, 1898 newspaper article, Dennis died on Wednesday, December 21, 1898 from lingering injuries received in a sledding accident when his horses were spooked by the train a few days earlier on December 16, 1898.
Dennis and his wife are both buried in St. Brigid's Cemetery.
