Harriet (Church) Bates was born on December 2, 1860 in England to John Church and Hannah (Budworth) Church. She married George Henry Bates in England and settled in Portage, Cambria, Pennsylvania where she resided until her sudden death while traveling abroad with the Gold Star Mothers pilgrimages in 1930. She suffered a sudden cerebral hemorrhage and remained confined at the Nouvel Hotel in Verdun, France. At least one publication states she died while visiting her son's grave at the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, though no known evidence has been surfaced to prove this as fact. According to one news article, Harriet's sudden illness and death went unknown for a time to the remainder of the party she traveled with. She was transported from Verdun, France to Paris, France with military honors where she lay in state until her journey brought her home. Harriet, may the untold stories of your pilgrimage one day see the sun rise.
