Mitchell was the first of John Bassom & Ethel Flora (Brown) Sharp's three children. His Sharp grandparents were Edward B. & Priscilla Melissa Holland (Bell) who moved to Bellefonte around 1871, shortly after they were married near Otterville, Cooper Co, MO.

Mitchell told a few stories about growing up near Bellefonte where his parents had lived their entire life. He said his grandfather Sharp had given the farm to his parents when he had split up his homestead and divided it among his children. His father raised cattle and grew corn and hay to feed them.

The weather was good, and they could grow things easily. When he was growing up, he did a lot of hunting in his spare time. He hunted quail and squirrel for food and skunk and possum for their hides. Skunk hides sold for $2 or $3, and possum hides sold for about $1.50. Every now and then, he smelled like a skunk when he went home.

He and his cousins and friends fished in Crooked Creek, which ran through the middle of town. The children attended Pott's School House, a school on week days, and a church and Sunday school on weekends. If a person was seriously ill, a doctor came to the house. Otherwise, neighbor women helped people with their ailments. Mitchell said if you saw a doctor at someone's house, you knew they were pretty bad off.

Mitchell died on February 19, 1999, in Odessa, Texas, at the age of 86.
