John was the eighth of Edward B. & Priscilla "Hollan" (Bell) Sharp's nine children.

John, a farmer, married Ethel Flora Brown in January 15, 1911, and made their home in Bellefonte. Their children were: Mitchell Eugene (July 17, 1912), John "Lecester" (June 23, 1919), & Virginia "Ginny" Ann (February 11, 1928).

John grew up learning the basics of farming on his father's farm, which consisted of 140 acres. He also acquired the skills of dealing in livestock, so after he was married it was only natural that he continued this way of life.

He & Ethel helped celebrate his mother's 68th birthday, an event that was published in the Harrison Times on Nov. 21, 1914: "A BIRTHDAY SURPRISE. Mrs. Edward Sharp of Bellefonte was pleasantly surprised Monday morning Nov. 16th it being her 68th birthday, when her daughters began to arrive with well filled baskets and to display a bountiful repast for the noonday meal. Mrs. Sharp was not allowed in the kitchen or dining room until 12 o'clock. When she was then ushered into the dining room and served by her daughters, Mrs. Wm. Cook, Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. John Hathcoat, Everton, Mrs. Frank Burns and Mrs. Carl Eoff, Bellefonte, Mrs. Oscar Capps, Harrison, and her son John Sharp and wife, Bellefonte . . . "

Ethel and John, age 28, were living in Bellefonte when he registered for the WWI draft on June 5, 1917. John was self employed as a farmer near Olvey, AR. He indicated that he had a wife and child, and claimed an exemption because he had a family to support. His physical description was medium build and height, gray eyes and dark hair. The record was signed John Bassom Sharp.

On April 22, 1935 a new club was organized in Bellefonte community, called the Bellefonte Special H.D. Club. Ethel's sister-in-law, Bessie Eoff, was elected as the club's reporter. No doubt, at the suggestion of Bessie, Ethel soon joined the club. Meetings were held at the homes of the members where they devotionals and demonstrations on various subjects from how to make creamed soup, prepare hot rolls, rug making, gardening, making toys, etc. Ethel was known for the beautiful flowers that grew in her yard. On July 19, 1935, the club members held a pie supper at Ethel & John's home. On October 31, the club members gave a Halloween party for their friends and relatives, which was held at Ethel & John's home.

Toward the last of October 1937 John was seriously coping with pneumonia, but fortunately recovered after a period of time.

Ethel died on December 19, 1942. His second wife was Ann Stanley.

John's life was ended tragically early on the morning of May 11, 1974. News about his death was published in the local newspaper.

"John B. Sharp, 85, of Route 2, Harrison was struck and killed by a car about 3:15 a.m. Saturday on U.S. Highway 62, about two miles east of Bellefonte.

State Trooper Keith Cornett said Sharp apparently was walking on the highway and was hit by a car driven by Roy Owen Burkes, 19, Route 1, Hindsville. Burkes told police Sharp was standing in the middle of the road and he was unable to stop. Burkes' 1968 Dodge Coronet station wagon, traveling west on U.S. 62, left 108 feet of skid marks attempting to stop before hitting the victim. The vehicle came to a stop in the westbound lane, facing west, with the left rear tire near the impact area. The victim was lying in the west bound lane, approximately four feet north of the center line and approximately 48 feet west of the point of impact, the trooper said and some 30 feet west of the vehicle's final resting position.

A second car, which was behind the Burkes vehicle, also was unable to stop and it crashed into the Burkes vehicle in the rear and spun around counterclockwise, coming to rest in front of the Burkes station wagon in the west bound lane, facing south. The vehicle, a 1957 Chevrolet, was driven by P.M. Blankenship, 26, of Route 2, Everton. His auto left approximately 132 feet of skid marks and traveled some 21 feet more after striking the Burkes vehicle.

The trooper said Sharp, a farmer, was dressed in dark colored clothing which included a blue flannel shirt. Both drivers said they were traveling approximately 55 miles per hour at the time of the accident. The accident occurred a few hundred yards from Sharp's residence.
