In his early years he was a rancher in South Texas - Karnes and Gonzales counties. He met his wife, Mary Lou Patrick, while she was a teacher in Karnes City Texas. They married August 18, 1941 in Mt. Zion, Hopkins County, Texas. Herman and Mary Lou were the parents of two daughters.
He spent many years as a special Texas Ranger who worked for the Texas and Southwestern Cattlemen's Association as a brand inspector.
