Botanist. He is credited with being the foremost collector of plants in Australia and was the naturalist on Matthew Flinters' expedition to that country, in 1805, to which he wrote, "Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae" (1820). He was Keeper of Botanical Collections at the British Musuem from 1827 to 1836. He was President of the Linnean Society from 1849 to 1853 and was the discoverer of Brownian Motion (the constant erratic movement of tiny particles suspended in a liquid or gas).
