Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Charles F. Blaisdell, rector of Calvary Episcopal Church, will be held at the residence this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Judge Charles N. burch, Henry Wetter, S.E. Ragland, W.P. Metcalf, S.M. Neely, Paul Dillard, W.P. Battle and Dr. Battle Malson. Mr. Turley had been in bad health for about four weeks with a kidney ailment, but continued business. He was at his offices Wednesday. Early Thursday morning, after going downstairs to get The Commercial Appeal, he was lying down reading the paper when he called out to his wife that he thought he was drying. He died shortly after Mrs. Turley reached him. Death was attributed to acute uremic poisoning. Mr. Turley was president of the Turley Mortgage Company and T.J. Turley & Co. He was president of the Memphis Country Club for a number of years and a member of the Tennessee Club. Mr. Turley was a member of Calvary Church. He was descended from the Battle and Boddie families, two of the oldest families in the south. His father and his grandfather, for whom he was named, were two of the builders of Memphis. He was born Nov. 27, 1874, in the old Turley home at Linden and Wellington, built by his grandfather and still owned by the family. He went to school at the old Memphis Military Academy, then taught by Prof. Wharton B. Jones. He was a student at Webb School, Bellbuckle, Tenn., Virginia Military Institute, and the University of Virginia. He finished school in 1900 and returned to Memphis to enter the Memphis Trust Company, later merged into the present Bank of Commerce and Trust Company. After four years he went into the real estate business for himself as T.J. Turley & Co., later formed a partnership with the late Cylon Frazer Sr., in 1908, then with Millard Naill as Turley-Frazer-Naill, in 1911. In 1913 he organized the firm of Turley & Naill with offices on Second, next door to The Commercial Appeal. Turley & Naill formed a partnership with Percy Galbreath as Turley-Naill-Galbreath Company, in 1917. In 1920 another partnership was made with John P. Bullington as Turley-Bullington Mortgage Company, and in 1931, Mr. Bullington was bought out and the present firm of Turley Mortgage Company formed. Mr. Turley's principal interests for the past 15 years had been in mortgages. His father, the late Thomas Battle Turley, who died a number of years ago, a Confederate veteran, was United States senator for four years, appointed to fill the unexpired term of the late Senator Isham G. Harris. Mr. Turley, in 1908, married Miss Shallye Johnson, daughter of Mrs. Virginia Johnson, of an old Fayette County family. He is survived, besides his wife, by his mother, Mrs. Irene Rayner Turley; two sisters, Mrs. John Mary and Mrs. John Trenholm, and a brother, E.R. Turley, all prominent Memphians. Spencer-Sturla is in charge of funeral arrangements. (Published in The Commercial Appeal, Memphis, TN, on July 15, 1932)
