Son of Nathaniel Atwoood and Mary Adams, grandson of Nathaniel Atwood and Mary Lucas, Francis Adams of England and Mary Buck of Massachusetts.

Nathaniel was the husband of Susannah Silence Shurtleff, the eldest daughter of Barnabas Shurtleff and Jemimia Adams. They were married Dec 05, 1748, in Plympton and had the following children:
