Mary Casey met and married her husband, John Kennedy around 1871 and moved to Gold Hill, Nevada, where John became a silver miner. To them four children were born; James, Jospeh, Mary and Catherine.
In 1916, Mary and John and their son Joseph along with their widowed daughter Catherine Setaro and her two children, Raymond and Jack moved to Escalon on property that Catherine had purchased. Because wood was still so scarce following the massive rebuilding effort resulting from the San Francisco earthquake, they dismantled their home in Gold Hill, Nevada and rebuilt in Atlanta (now Escalon). There Mary helped to raise her grandchildren while their mother worked in San Francisco to support the family.
In her later years she suffered from cataracts and became blind, but still walked the property on which she lived. She was a tiny woman in stature, but had an authoritative manner and loving heart. She is remembered for keeping her Irish brogue throughout her long years.
