George Washington Adair was the son of Isaac Adair and Susan Elizabeth Goates. He was married to Mary Catherine "Polly" Shipman on February 25, 1875 in Decaturville, Decatur, Tennessee. Their four children were:

Emma A. Adair, who did not marry
A. Jennie Adair Montgomery
Albert Franklin Adair
Mary Ella Adair Brasher

In 1920, George participated in the Tennessee Civil War Veterans Questionnaire and verified that he and his brother, James David Adair, both enlisted for one year on January, 1864 as Privates at Clfton, Tennessee in Company "C" of the 2nd Tennessee Mounted Infantry, Union during the Civil War. His brother also completed the same Questionnaire. The Questionnaire also verified their parents as Isaac and Susan Adair.
