William Luther McGann, about 46, of Beech Grove, Nelson County, was instantly killed in an accident at the Matthews-Curtis Company sand and gravel quarry this morning shortly before 10 o'clock.C. L. Thompson, a foreman at the quarry and a brother-in-law of the accident victim said that apparently McGann's clothing caught in a line shaft on the end of the scrubber and that he was wound into the machinery. Death he said came instantly. Body was discovered by Mr. Thompson when the machinery stopped and he went to investigate the cause. He had seen and talked with Mr. McGann less than 15 minutes before the accident. Body was removed to the Etter Funeral Home here to await funeral arrangements. Dr. C. P. Obenschain, Augusta County coroner, was called to conduct a routine investigation and make report. Mr. McGann, son of the late William and Myra McGann, of Beech Grove, Nelson County is survived by his wife, the former Miss Sallie Campbell of Beech Grove and the following children: Bradford McGann, Baltimore; Mrs. Louise Campbell, Delaware; Miss Mabel McGann, Waynesboro; Luther McGann Jr., Waynesboro; Miss Jean McGann, Beech Grove; and Standley McGann, Baltimore; also by one son-in-law, Delmas Campbell, Delaware; three sisters, Mrs. C. L. Thompson and Mrs. Gracie Quick, Beech Grove; and Miss Sue McGann, Waynesboro; and a brother, J. E. McGann, Newport News. He had been a member of the Beech Grove Christian Church since boyhood and for some years had served as superintendent of the Sunday School. Prior to accepting employment with Mathews-Curtis Company about six weeks ago he had been engaged in farm and orchard work with W. R. Rodes in Nelson County. At Mathews-Curtis Company he was employed in quarry operations and had supervision of the scrubber, sand screening and ballast screening equipment. He was making his regular rounds looking after and oiling the machines when he met with the accident.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the Beech Grove Christian Church for William Luther McGann who was instantly killed in an accident at Mathews-Curtis Company sand and gravel quarry yesterday shortly before 10:00 a.m. Rev. J. L. McKinney will be in charge of the services with Rev. J. T. Watson assisting. Active pallbearers will be W. R. Rodes, Clarence Campbell, Johnnie Fields, J. E. Falls, Raymond Hughes and Jess Hughes. Honorary pallbearers will be John Whitehead, Dr. Homer Clark, J. K. Ramsey, S. E. Saunders, Hope Meeks, J. R. Fitzgerald, Irving Cambpell, C. W. Dodd, Dave Grove, E. S. Dodd, Herman Fields, J. W. Falls, Joe Mawyer, Jeter Goodwin, C. H. Martin and C. W. Embrey.
