Mrs. Nicholas Becker, One Of Remsen's Oldest Residents, Died Sunday Morning.
Mrs. Nicholas Becker, one of the oldest residents of Remsen, passed away at her home here last Sunday after suffering for about a year with dropsy. She was sixty eight years of age last January. Mrs. Becker suffered of a little more then a twelve months, but was able to be up and about until about a week before death, when she was suddenly taken down and was confined to bed steadily. Mrs. Nicholas Becker, whose maiden name was Mary Schaefer, was born on January 22, 1848, in Dubuque county, Iowa. She lived there with her parents until she reached womanhood, and was united in marriage to Nicholas Beker forty-eight years ago. The couple remained in eastern Iowa for a number of years, coming to Remsen thirty-five years ago. They made their home here steadily ever since. To their union seventeen children were born, three of them proceeded her in death. The fourteen living children are: Mrs. Charles Sample (should read: Sampont), Black Hills, S.D.; Mrs. Eric Krispi (should be Kiesby), Larchwood, Iowa; Mrs. John Weidert, Sioux City, Iowa; Mrs. Mary Grell (should read Krell), living in Minnesota; Mrs. Frank Smid, LeMars; Mrs. Ed Deubel, Remsen, Jos. Becker, LeMars; Mrs. Lizzie Luken, Hawarden; Mrs. Ernest Simpson, Wishik, N.D.; Mrs. Chester Clabaugh, LeMars; Nic Becker, S.D.; Mrs. Nic Wiltgen, LeMars; Miss Anna Becker and John Becker, residing at the home in Remsen. Besides her husband and children, the deceased is survived by three sisters and one brother, namely, Ven. Sister M. Salomi of Stradford, Wis. Mrs. Louis Schaffner of Dubuque; and Matthew Shaefer of Cortland, Nebr. Mrs. Becker's death removes one of the oldest people, in point of residence, in this community, and a woman whose passing is regretted by many. She was a kind and loving mother, wife, and fiend, and was esteemed by all. The funeral was held yesterday morning with solemn services at St. Mary's Catholic Church, of which the deceased was a lifelong member. The services were largely attended, an evidence of the esteem in which she was held. Interment was made in St. Mary's cemetery.

On her marriage certificate, Mary's name appears as "Marie Schaffer". They were married by a circuit court justice of the peace.
