Son of John Wood (abt. 1590, England - bef. 17 Mar 1655, Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI) and his first wife, name unknown (abt. 1595, England - poss. 1643, Maspeth, Nassau Co., New Amsterdam [Queens Co., New York aft. 1683].

He is NOT the son of John Hewson “the Mariner” Wood, a theory disproven in 1966.

John Wood (abt. 1620, England - 26 Aug 1704, Middletown, Newport Co., RI) is often referred to as "John Wood of Middletown" to differentiate him from his father John Wood who is called "John Wood of Portsmouth". Few, if any, source records refer to this John Wood as "John Wood Jr."
