A memorial service will be held June 19, 2002 for Norman William McLeod of Springfield, who died May 14 of cancer. He was 89.

Norman was born January 4, 1913 in Osage City, Kansas to Jack and Rosalie Smith McLeod. He was the oldest of three sons. He and his family moved to Clarkston, Washington in 1918. Norman went to school in Clarkston and graduated from High school there. He then attended college in Lewiston, Idaho.

Norman and his family lived just down the street from the Forge Family. This is where he met and married the love of his life, Genevieve. They were married July 4, 1938 in San Diego, California.

Norman was a 30-year career naval aviator. Originally going in as enlisted, the Navy had a program where enlisted men could learn to fly and earn a commision. Norman had always wanted to fly and jumped at the chance. He spent the rest of his time as an officer and an aviator. He was stationed all over the United Stated including Florida, Texas, Arizona, Hawaii and even Alaska. Norman and his family were stationed in Hawaii just prior to the bombing of Pearl Harbor having been reassigned only months prior to the attack. Norman was also stationed in Japan after World War II where he was the Navy's liason with the Japanese Navy. Norman's final assignment was as the M and P Officer at Litchfield Naval Air Facility in Goodyear, Arizona.

Norman was the recipiant of the Bronze Star. He was awarded this medal for meritorious service during WWII aboard the USS Kenneth Whiting by Rear Admiral John Perry.

He moved to the Eugene-Springfield area in 1963 after his retirement. Norman and his wife, Gen, raised Arabian horses in Creswell. He decided that he wanted to become a farrier, so he entered the program at Oregon State University earning his license. He shoed horses for many years. When they decided to give up the farm, they moved to Springfield.

Norman had a love of learning and took many different classes at Lane Community College. He learned to make jewlery through classes there. All of his family received items that he made.

Norman enjoyed helping people. He became a volunteer at Willamalane Senior Center, helping people during this time as a tax preparer. He also loved to garden and derived great please from growing all sorts of things in his garden. Every fall he and Gen would make applesauce.

Norman also enjoyed traveling. He and Gen went all over the United States. They also traveled to Scotland and Australia.

Norman was a member of the Elks and the Silver Eagles Association. He was also a life member of the Masons and Retired Officers Association.

Norman is survived by his wife, Gen, a son, Norman Jr "Bill" of Kingsville, Texas; a daughter, Sylvia Donoho of Springfield; a brother, Ivan of Spruce Pine, North Carolina; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
