Thomas was probably given his middle name after his grandmother, Mary Alvord, of Connecticut. He and members of the Judd family moved to Canada from New York abut 1820 , but remained American citizens.

Thomas and Teresa joined the Church in 1836 and sold their farm in order to join other members of the church. They lived in New York until they could afford to to make the journey West. They finally moved to Nauvoo in 1841. Thomas built a small home in Nauvoo for his family and his parents. Thomas had a difficult time finding enough work to care for his family, so they moved to Springfield, where he got work. They were able to leave with the 28 Oct 1849, George A. Smith Company. His parents both died in Illinois.

Their first year in the Valley was hard, but they survived and built a home and life for themselves and their family. During the Johnston Army problems, they lived with a son in Lehi.

Thomas was a Third Lieutenant in the Nauvoo Legion in the Valley.
