Wife of Thomas Eades

Priscilla was the daughter of John and Rachel (Perry) West.

She married on 11 Aug 1787, Botetourt Co., VA, to Thomas Eades, the son of Robert and Mary Eades of Rock Creek, Frederick Co., Maryland.

In 1788, they were listed on the tax roll in Bedford county with other members of his family.

In 1790, Thomas and Priscilla went west to the Kentucky frontier, along with many other Virginians looking for cheaper land. Priscilla's sister Sarah, who had married Thomas' brother John, also came, as did Priscilla's parents and the rest of her family. They settled in Bourbon county, where Thomas was listed on the tax list that year. Priscilla's father was listed the next year.

Thomas and Priscilla opened a much-needed tavern and hotel in the tiny but booming town of Paris [then called Bourbonton], Bourbon's county seat. It was only the town's second tavern, the first having been opened by Priscilla's brother, Thomas. In 1795, he became the first postmaster for the town and set up the post office in the tavern. As postmaster, he would have known all the local residents, including trailblazer Daniel Boone. This tavern still stands and is on the National Historical Register.

In 1796, the very famous Cane Ridge Meeting House Gospel revival was held a few miles out of town. No doubt they found an opportunity to attend. Everyone else did.

In 1810, Thomas and Priscilla were listed on the Bourbon county census with their nine children. They held no slaves.

War of 1812 - Thomas may have been too young to fight in the Revolutionary War, but he didn't think he was too old to fight in 1812. He enlisted as a Private and fought alongside his son Horace and two of his future sons-in-law, brothers James and Granville Rutherford.

In 1820, they were listed on the Bourbon Co., KY census with eight children still at home.

In 1827, Thomas and Priscilla sold their land in Bourbon county and moved across the line into Nicholas county. The deed was copied in Allen county, where the buyer lived:

Allen Co., KY - Deed Book D 1826-1831
Pg 48-49 This Indenture made this sixth day of March one thousand eight hundred and twenty seven between THOS. EADES and his wife PRISCILLA of the county of Bourban and state of Kentucky of the one part and RICHARD MITCHEL of Allen County and state aforesaid ... in consideration of the sum of one hundred & fifteen dollars ... confirm unto the sd RICHARD MITCHEL ... tract of land containing one hundred & thirty three achors (sic) ... on Baysfork a branch of Big Barren river ... Wit: ASA B. EADES, GRANVILLE O. EADES Signed: THOS. EADES, PRISCILLA EADES

In 1830, they were enumerated on the census in Nicholas Co., KY, still with a full house.

Thomas died in 1838 in Nicholas Co., or Bourbon Co., KY. His death was described many years later in his daughter Rachel Rutherford's biography: "Her father went to the nearest [long blotch - illegible] his horse, and, being famished, called for a drink of water in front of the store. He drank it and fell on the side-walk, dying before he could be carried into the store."

He was buried in the Old Millersburg cemetery in Bourbon county.

There is some confusion about when Priscilla died. Her tombstone death date seems to read 1817, but she was definitely still alive when she signed the land deed in 1827, and probably in 1830 when Thomas had a wife her age on the census. It's possible the date was really 1847 and the stylized "4" has partially worn away.

Some help is given by the 1887 biography of her daughter Rachael P. Rutherford:
"There were three singular deaths in her family... Her mother one evening at supper pushed back her plate after eating a hearty meal and expired... At the death of her parents they were between 70 and 80." Priscilla would have turned seventy in 1839, so 1847 seems to be the correct date.
