She was the daughter of William and Nancy Garris of Anson County, NC, and was one of 10 children. Her family had moved to Richmond County, NC, by 1883, and lived in the Roberdel area. On March 6, 1920 she married her sweetheart, James Little, of Rockingham, NC. They had a successful cotton farm, until the depression. James had stored his cotton in a warehouse, hoping for an increase in the cottom price, when a fire destroyed the warehouse. They lost everything, and moved into town. Lula never complained about her hardship, nor about what she used to have. She took in laundry and was a cook in a boarding house to help keep the family together. James and Lula had 7 children, Woodrow, William, George, Clara, Betty Lou, Sarah, and Nancy. Lula was a member of the Pee Dee Baptist Church, and would walk to church every Sunday, until convinced by her daughter to attend the First Baptist Church, which was at the end of their street. In 1953, James died, leaving Lula with the two youngest children, 12 and 15 years old, still at home. Lula saw all seven children graduate from high school, marry, and starting their own families. She was survived by her seven children, and fifteen grandchildren. Seven more grandchildren were born after her passing.
