Jim was the son of George Washington and Roxanna Adams Davis. He served his country in WWI as a private in the infantry and was injured. He had life-long health problems as a result of the injury. He married Tennessee May Nichols of Cades Cove and they raised a family of fourteen. They lived at Tabcat Creek near Calderwood, at the Tollhouse near Deal's Gap, and at Happy Valley in the Chilhowee Community.He was affectionately known as "Daddy Jim".
