TYLER, Texas— Dr. Joe E. Dawson, age 62, of Quitman, Texas, died on Monday January 4, 1999 in Tyler, Texas.

Joe Edgar Dawson was born on July 5, 1936, in Alpine, Texas, to the late Edgar Perry Dawson and Pearl Shackelford Dawson.

Joe was reared in Marathon, Texas, in the Big Bend country. Joe received his B.S. in Animal Science from Texas University in 1960 and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Texas University in 1962. He had been an associate of Dr. M.S. Weedon in Waxahachie, Texas, from 1962-1965.

Dr. Joe E. Dawson was the owner and operator of Quitman Animal Clinic since 1965. He was also a member of many veterinary medical associations, such as the American Veterinary Medical Association, Texas Veterinary Medical Association, director, T.V.M.A. in 1979, and American Association of Bovine Practitioners.

Dr. Joe E. Dawson also was past program chairman and past secretary and treasurer for Northeast Texas Veterinary Medical Association, member of Three Rivers Veterinary Medical Association, East Texas Equine Practitioners Association, and Texas Veterinary Association of General Practitioners, past president of Texas Academy of Veterinary Practitioners and East Texas Veterinary Medical Association. He was "Diagnostician of The Year" in 1 991 by Texas Medical Diagnostic Laboratory and "General Practitioner of the Year" in 1993 by state of Texas, Texas Veterinary Medical Association. He was a member of the Quitman School Board, 1969-1980; president for two terms of Wood County Farm Bureau, 1973-1975; member of board of directors of Wood County National Bank, 1982-1998; Friends of Quitman Public Library, Wood County Central Hospital Endowment Fund, 1991-1998. He also was associated with Wood County Junior Livestock Show and Mineola Hay Show. Quitman Youth Foundation Park was named Joe Dawson Park in 1991.

He was a member of First Methodist Church, Quitman. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Frances Marie (Hester) Dawson, Quitman; two daughters and sons-in-law, Suzanne Dawson Terrell and Mike Terrell and Cheryl Dawson Chaney and Johnny Chaney, all of Quitman; brothers, Perry Dawson, of San Antonio, John G. Dawson of Corpus Christi, Tommy Dale Dawson of Midland and Leslie Dawson of San Saba; sister, Wyllette Dawson Scott of Commanche; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers include Wiley Garland, Dr. Mike Reed, Bobby Jack Brown, Dr. Warren Deal, Billy Weems, Doy Plocher, Dr. Randy Bennett, Dr. Norman Hicks, and Filiberto Santos. Honorary pallbearers include Juan Perales, Dr. Jim Reeves, Henry Harris, Dr. Wally Kraft, Dr. A.M. Easterling, Dr. M.S. Weedon, Bill Herring, Dr. Karl James, Sam White, Kenneth Williams, and Harry Darby.

Funeral services for Dr. Joe E. Dawson are scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the First Baptist Church, Quitman, Texas, with the Rev. Tommy Ham officiating.
