Her name was often spelled Adah, but the 1870 census, the 1880 census, her marriage certificate and her death certificate use the "Ada" spelling. Since this appears to be the legal spelling, it is used here. The Androus family often went by their middle names. In Ada's case, she often went by "Nira," short for Monira.

Nira was born in Ohio, the eighth child of Henry William & Amanda Francis Hills. She came west to California with her family in the spring of 1860 arriving at Brown's Valley in Yuba County. Shortly thereafter, Henry Androus acquired 160 acres of land in Section 31 of Long Bar township, on Knox Road near Loma Rica, about 13 miles north of Marysville, where the family settled.

On Sept. 22, 1872, Nira married John Wesley Hill. They lived in Colusa County where their son, Marion Wesley was born in 1874. Then they bought a ranch at Saltz Springs in Yuba County, 5 miles west of Brown's Valley where second son George Timothy was born in 1876. About 1882, they bought property at Bangor, Butte County, where John was a postmaster for a time.

Nira and John had nine children and were also helping to raise her brother, Frederick Androus' three children; Henry Ellsworth, Adrian E, and Olive. After the disappearance of her husband, John Hill in 1898, her brother Frederick and her son Marion Wesley helped support the family. About 1931 when Nira was 78, she went to live with her daughter, Josephine Clyde Zink at the Bald Rock Ranch where she died in 1938.
