Mary Ann's whereabouts in Caroline County are not recorded until 1860 where she is found living in Port Royal, Virginia in the household of Richard and Ann E. Gouldman. Her occupation was teacher. Her son Walter wrote that he used his mother as the authority for the traditions about which he wrote. He said "she was well educated and taught school before and during the war. The traditions came through her father and grandfather and that reaches back to the early part of 1700 which is only 90 years from the time the two Cash brothers are said to have arrived at Jamestown in 1611". Richard Gouldman's great-great-granddaughter Nancy suspects that Mary Ann was living there and teaching the Gouldmans' many children. At the time of her parent's separation, Mary Ann would have been between 16-18 years old, old enough to be working, so she likely stayed on in Carolina County and taught after earning her teaching certificate.

In the 1870 Caroline Census, she was 35 years old and living with husband David, age 33, son Walter, 2, and David's sisters Harriet, 18 and (Mary) Susan, 16. Mary Ann and David lived the rest of their lives at the Cash Homestead.

Mary Ann died June 3, 1912 in Caroline County, Virginia and is buried next to David in Greenlawn Cemetery in an unmarked grave.
