Carlton W. Holmes Jr., 79, of Burlington, died on April 11, 2009, at 1:09 p.m. at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

Born July 7, 1929, in Independence, he was the son of Carlton W. Sr. and Marie Hansen Holmes. He married Gertrude Aswegan on Oct. 27, 1957, in Waterloo, and they later divorced. He then married Patsy "Pat" Bennett in 1990. She preceded him in death in 1996.

Mr. Holmes was a 1947 graduate of Waterloo West High School. He attended the University of Indiana and the Iowa State Teachers College, where he also taught. He was a corporal in the U.S. Army, serving from 1953 to 1959.

Carlton was president of Midwest Federal Bank, Burlington, retiring in 1989. He was very active with the Boy Scouts of America, where he served as past president of the local council and vice president of the North Central Region of Boy Scouts. He was awarded the Silver Beaver award and the Silver Antelope award to honor his service.

He was a 40-year member of the Carthage Lake Club and a member of the Rotary Club, where he was a recipient of the Harris award. He served as past president of the local chapter of the United Way. He was active in the campaign to build the new YMCA/YWCA facility in Burlington and instrumental in the construction of the new Great River Medical Center. He was a solid contributor to the Fine Arts League and Hope Haven.

He enjoyed woodworking, coin collecting, traveling and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his four children, Valerie "Val" (Ralph) Kitch of Cedar Rapids, Edward "Ed" (Joanne) Holmes of Germantown, Wis., Diane Albright of Danville and Michelle "Shelly" Holmes of Burlington; eight grandchildren; one great grandchild; one brother, Eugene (Darlene) Holmes of Cedar Falls; and one sister, Carolyn (Jim) Ilax of Cedar Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Pat; a son, John; and one sister, Sue Hum.

The funeral services for Mr. Holmes will be held on Wednesday, April 15, at 1 p.m. in Lunning Chapel, Burlington. Interment will be held in Biggsville Cemetery, Biggsville, Ill. Friends may call from noon to 7 p.m. today, April 14, in Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

Memorials have been established for the Boy Scouts of America or to Hope Haven.
