Velma Estelle Bates Freeman, 71, of Baton Rouge passed away Tuesday, October 16 after an extended illness. She was born October 12, 1936 in Fort Smith, Arkansas to parents Andrew Jefferson Bates, Sr. and Betty Elvada Thompson Bates.

Graveside services for Mrs. Freeman will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 20, 2007 at Hardin Chapel Cemetery in Hardin with Mr. Richard Moody officiating. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday prior to the service at the cemetery. Services are under the arrangement of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Dayton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters: Juanita, Eunice, Andrea, Ibalene, Irene, Verla, and Imelda; her brothers: Andrew Jefferson Bates, Jr. and Ernest Berry; and her grandson: Dexx Allen Ross. She is survived by her daughters: Gracie Lee Burch and R.D. Fregia of Ames, and Teresa Thomas of Wallisville; grandchildren: Thelma Jean Lloyd, Teresa Jean Lloyd, Tessa Lynn Burch, Selena Kaye Cain, Loryie Lee Burch, Daniel Eugene Burch; great-grandchildren: Joshua, Taylor, Kyser, Tristan, Kimberly, Nicole, Zackery, Justin, Jacoba, and Tyler; sisters: Delilah Bird of Baytown, Emma Webb and husband Jim of Baytown, Darlene Lawson, and Judy VanOver and husband Dan of Washington.
