"JOHN HESSICK, A PIONEER, FOUND DEAD IN BED - Yesterday morning John Hessick was found dead in bed in his home in West Florence, being passed peacefully away in his sleep some time during the night. For many years Mr. Hessick has been a resident here. Nearly everyone knew him and everyone was his friend. His quiet mannner and gentlemanly conduct commanded the respect of all.

He was born in Germany on Feb. 11, 1827, and at the time of his death was 81 years, 6 months and 19 days of age. When three years old he came with his father's family to America and settled in St. Clair county, Illinois. When grown to manhood he engaged in farming and stock raising and became well to do financially, but reverses later in life caused a loss of part of his accumulations.

In the spring of 1880 he came to Canon City and after a few weeks went to Leadville where he engaged in business until the fall of 1881 when he moved to Florence. For several years he was in business here and finally retired to private life and employed his time in caring for several pieces of real estate he had acquired in Florence and elsewhere.

On January 20, 1898, Mrs. Hessick died and since then he has made his home part of the time with his children and part in one of his own houses. For several years he has lived on West Denver street close to the home of his son-in-law, Thos. Ashby. On Sunday morning Mr. Hessick did not appear at his usual hour for arising and Mr. Ashby went to his room and found him as though in a peaceful slumber. A physician was called but he had been dead for probably eight hours. The body was cold and rigor mortis had --------- was not deemed necessary to hold a coroner's inquest.

For many years he has suffered from a complication of ailments and about a month ago he had a severe sick spell. The cause of death was chronic nethritis.

The remains were taken to the Delbers undertaking parlors where the funeral services will be held probably Thursday afternoon although definite arrangements will not be made until relatives at a distance shall have been heard from. Interment will be made in Highland cemetery beside the remains of his wife.

Of Mr. Hessick's immediate family there are now living five daughters: Mrs. Thos.. Ashby now at Westcliffe; Mrs. L. W. Robinson of Montana; Mrs. Ella Towers, of Los Angeles; Mrs. Carl Bramming, of Bakersfield and Mrs. Carter Mouser of Arkansas; and two sons, Joseph J. of Florence and George of Arizona."

Coroner C. H. Whitmore was called to Florence Sunday morning to inquire into the death of John Hessick, who was found dead in his bed there a few hours previously. Deceased was a native of Germany and had lived in Florence for more than a quarter of a centery. One son, Joseph Hessick, resided in Florence, and another son, as well as a daughter, lived in California. He had suffered from kidney trouble for a long time, and from preference, had for a consideral period, lived to himself. "FOUND DEAD IN BED

John Hessick, Former Resident of Jackson County, Dies at Home at West Florence, Col.

John Hessick who will be remembered by some of our older citizens as former resident of this county, south of Carbondale, was found dead in bed at home in West Florence, Col., a few days ago. Mr. Hessick was a half brother of John BORGER, Sr., of this city. Since 1880 he has lived in this city where his wife died ten years ago. He leaves seven children five daughters and two sons, all of whom live in the west.

Deceased was born in Germany in 1827. When three years old the family came to America and settled in St. Clair county, this state. When a young man about the year 1848, Mr. Hessick came to Jackson county and located on the farm commonly known as the Lipe place, five miles south of Carbondale, where he lived for thirty years leaving in 1879 for Colorado where he lived until the time of his death"

NOTE: Errors are possible as I could only view a small section of the news article at a time. Half brother John Borger is listed as a survivor.

Information of first marriage and children from that marriage is from the great great grandson Steve Hessick, who also lists the following:

"John's mother was Mary (Joseph) who was born on 5 May 1806 in Freeburg, Germany. Not much info on John's father, except that he died shortly after the birth of John's brother George. The story goes that the John's father was killed in the Napoleonic wars, and that Mary did not want her kids to face the same fate, so she immigrated to the US. She later married a John Whimer, then married a George Borger. She died in 1891 in Carbondale.

There is a confusing record on the internet showing the manifest of passengers on a ship Lancashire showing Francis Hessick (male, age 32), Mary Hessick (age 22), George (age 1) on board from Liverpool to NY in 1842. Never been able to figure that out."
