David Dings was the son of Peter Dings and Catherine Barner. Left motherless at age seven. Lived with Uncle Joseph Barner of Charlotteville, NY until left school and learned carpenter trade. Later became a millwright, miller and businessman as merchant and manufacturer.

He worked as a mill operator in 1859. Operated mills at Braymanville, Schoharie, Huntersland and Oak Hill, NY. In 1859, operated a mill at Braymanville (Howe Cave), NY for his grandfather David I. Barner in partnership with his uncle Nelson Eckerson.

About 1858 he married Melissa Baker (1838-1913)of Berne, Albany, New York and daughter of Phineas Baker.

He served in the Civil War and enlisted in Company H, 91st Infantry Regiment New York on 8 Sep 1864.

He moved from New York to Grand Island, Neb. in 1880 and to Milwaukee, Wis. in 1889.
