Johnnie was the eldest of four children born to Alex and Carrie Morrison. He grew up on Orcas Island and in rural Whatcom County. In 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the 314th Troop Carrier Group of the Army Air Force, holding the rank of sergeant at the time of his discharge.

On April 7, 1949, he married Marie Troxel (1927 - 2008). They had one child, a son named John A. Morrison, Jr.

He was killed in a tragic automobile accident on Highway 20 between Sedro Woolley and Concrete in Skagit County when two westbound cars were racing side by side as he was driving up a hill going eastbound.
