Joseph Batts, Port Royal farmer, was shot and killed at new Castle in a duel with Taylor Breeden, a neighbor. Both men went to New Castle on business. They met on the courthouse steps. Both backed away, drew their guns and opened fire. Breeden’s first two shots took effect and Batts fell to his knees. It is said the men were involved in a law suit.

New Castle, Ky., Nov. 13---Joseph Batts, farmer was shot and killed in front of the court house today. He had just won a law suit from Taylor Breeden.
