YOUNG LAD KILLED
Was Dragged By Horse

A shocking accident occurred in the town of New Holstein, about two miles north of Kiel, last Satuday morning, which caused the sudden death of Clinton, the nine-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Math. Wagner.

At about ten o’clock Mr. Wagner sent the boy and his sister out to the pasture to get their team of horses, intending to haul in some barley. They had brought the animals to the gate, when they boy who was leading the horse, with the end of the rope quite securely wound around his right wrist, was unexpectedly thrown to the ground by a sudden jerk of the horse’s head in fighting off the flies. This scared the animal and it started off on a wild run, dragging they boy by its side along the ground, his head striking against a large stone, the jerk releasing the rope. Mrs. Wagner, who witnessed the accident from the house, was horror-stricken and frantically called to her husband, who was nearby and hurried to the scene. He found the boy lying unconscious on the ground, all of his clothing being torn from his body, which was badly bruised and bleeding from numerous wounds. He carried him into the house, where he expired soon after.
An examination showed that he had received a fracture to the skull and other fatal injuries.

The news of the accident spread rapidly in the neighborhood and was a great shock to the friends of Mr. and Mrs. Wagner, and the community in general, who sympathized with the bereaved parents in the death of their son, who had lost his young life in so horrible a manner.

Mr. and Mrs. Math. Wagner and children were residents of Kiel a few years, where Mr. Wagner was a member of the Kiel Livery Co. About two years ago they bought the Wm. Kuehl farm in the town of New Holstein, where they have since resided. Clinton was the eldest of three children and a lad of much promise. He will be sadly missed by the family, and by his associates, with whom he was a favorite.

The funeral took place Monday morning, services being held at the St. Peter and Paul’s church, Rev. Rumpel officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
