Smith Casterline, 73, a former surveyor of Blackford County, and city engineer passed away Monday afternoon at 2:15, following an illness of the past 4 weeks with complications of diseases. Mr. Casterline had been in a critical condition since last Thursday.
Smith Casterline was the son of John and Eliza Casterline and was born 2 miles west of this city, Feb. 7, 1845. He was born to a family of 6 children, of whom one sister and one brother survive him, they are Mrs. Rebecca Gadbury, who resides 3 miles west of the city, and Aaron Casterline, of Lincoln, Nebraska.
On Mar. 20, 1875 Mr. Casterline was united in marriage to Nancy Ellen Mill.
Smith Casterline, served various terms in city government, and owned one of the first photographic galleries in Hartford City. The family members still own several of his tintypes, as proof of this ability. He also wrote religious songs, and set poetry to music and played a melodeon. He was very much involved in music, and played for the famous ‘square dances' that were held in the community. He kept a daily diary from youth to old age, recording the weather, and other items of interest. These are family heirlooms.
Three children survive; George, of Michigan, Mrs. Eva Stamm of Newcastle, and Charles of Clarice, Penn. Six grandchildren survive, as well as many other relatives. Burial will be in Elizabethtown Cemetery.
