Pioneer Army Test Pilot Dies – Col. Armin F. Herold, 64, in Both World Wars
Col. Armin F. Herold, an Air Force veteran of both World Wars and a pioneer test pilot in Army aviation, died of a heart attack yesterday at Letterman Hospital. He was 64.
Colonel Herold, who lived at 755 Costa Rica Avenue, San Mateo, made aviation history in 1925 when he piloted an old DeHavilland 4-B warplane from Salt Lake City to San Francisco and back. He was a member of the Crissy Field squadron at the time.
In France—
During World War I, Colonel Herold flew a fighter plane in France. In World War II, he was commanding officer at McChord Field, Tacoma, Wash. He retired in 1945 [sic, 1944], after twenty-seven years in the service.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two sons, Capt. Armin F. Jr. of Riverside and Roland of San Jose; and two daughters, Mrs. Barbara Ann Holstein and Joyce Herold of San Mateo.
