Knud Martens, son of Ernest Edward Martens and his wife, Marie Sofie Jensen, was born February 3, 1889 at Odense, Denmark. He was baptized and confimed in St. Knuds Kirne in Odense.

He came to the U.S.A. in March of 1903 at the age of 14 years with his brother, Einer Martens.

On March 23, 1910, he was united in marriage with Marie Karen Christensen in the Bethany Lutheran Church near Ruskin by Pastor Lars Jensen. God blessed this union with six children: David, Harriet (who died at the age of 4 months), Harold, Ove, Dorothy and Esther.

After living on the same farm near Hardy for 55 years, they retired and moved to Ruskin when Mr. Martens health began to fail him.

On March 23, 1970, the couple was privileged to observe their 60th wedding anniversary in the midst of family and friends. The attendants at their wedding and still living were his brother, Einer Martens of Hardy, and Mrs. Theodore Hansen (Rena Christensen) of Hastings.

Mr. Martens recovered from his first surgery in 1965 but shortly after was severly burned. Being in and out of the hospital a number of times, it became necessary to make his home at the Good Samaritan Home in Superior. Death came quietly April 19, 1972. His age was 83 years, 2 months and 16 days.

He was preceded in death by his little daughter,, (sic) Harriet; a sister, Inger and a brother, Ove in Denmark; and a sister, Christina in Illinois.

There remain to cherish his memory, besides his widow; the five children: David and wife, Mr. and Mrs. David Martens of Hardy; Harold and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Harold E. Martens of Deshler; Ove and wife, Mrs. and Mrs. Ove Martens of Orland, California; Esther and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Romena of Wheatridge, Colorado; and Dorthy, Mrs. Dorothy Toepher of Denver, Colorado; 15 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; three brothers, Paul Martens, Odense, Denmark; Einer Martens of Hardy, Nebraska and Jens Christian Martens of Denver, Colorado; and two sisters, Johanne and Elna Martens of Odense, Denmark; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held April 22 from the Bethany Lutheran Church. Pastor Edward Hiller preached on the text John 14: 1-6. Hartley Petersen sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Abide With Me". Burial was in the Spring Creek Cemetery with the following as pallbearers: Willard Christensen, Ben Christensen, Jerome Christensen, Thorkild Kastrup, Darrel Rhoads and Magnus Petersen. The Megrue-Price Funeral Home of Superior was in charge of arrangements.
