French Cemetery
According to local tradition. This Cemetery derives its name from a group of French Settlers who were killed and buried near the site sometime during the 18th century. Although no physical evidence of the French burials has been found the name has been in common use for more than 100 years. Referred to the mid-1800's as the Pruett family cemetery, the graveyard is located on the land acquired by Beasley Pruett from the Mexican Government in 1824. Upon his death in 1835, Pruett was buried on his land grant in a NOW-UNMARKED GRAVE.

Beasley, Lucy and family came to Texas in 1825 and were listed on the Mexican census of 1826, Atascosita District (now Liberty County, Texas).

NOTE: The Will of Beasley dated April 2, 1832 has the last name spelled Prewitt. Beasley's grandson Elisha spelled his name Prewitt and Elisha has many recorded documents with this spelling and all of Elisha's decendants used the spelling Prewitt. We don't know why they used the spelling Pruett on the headstone.

There are many different spellings through the years and linking to the different memorials would be fine without changing all memorials. I will make note on the memorials that I have.
