Tryphena (Bingham) Shaw, daughter of Ozias and Sarah (Phelps) Bingham, both from CT was born Dec 28, 1773 in CT. Ozias and Sarah moved to Vermont with their family after the Revolutionary War (He was a veteran). Tryphena married John Shaw in Vermont Dec 3, 1790. All of their children were born there and they settled in Rutland , VT for over 40 years. John was a farmer and a post rider. This couple followed their family to the Michigan Territory around 1835/36 going by wagon when Tryphena was in her sixties and John was nearing seventy. They purchased land in the same area (Belle Arbor, Mi) where the Webster Cemetery was established and later sold the land to the Farley family longtime residents of the area. At that time the area was very swampy, with a corduroy rode, malaria was rampant, and when a terrible recession, starting around 1837, hit the country and all monies dried up, the families in this area suffered terribly. Eventually the only Shaw family members in the area were those buried there. Tryphena survived her husband and lived with her daughter Sarah (Shaw) Bailey until her death July 15, 1858 in Illinois at the age of 84.
