Moses Martin was born in New Hampshire, the son of Moses Martin. While he wqas still a boy the family moved to Pennsylvania, where he grew to manhood. He went west to Missouri and later to Illinois. For years he traveled extensively in the United States and visited England. It was here he married Emma Smith in 1846, a native of London. They came to the United States in 1848, and traveled overland to California, arriving in 1850 by way of Salt Lake City, his wife following him with their two daughters in 1852. They lived in Northern California until 1855, then located in San Bernardino, purchasing10 acres at the corner of Fifth and A Streets. He was th father of 8 children.
