Marie R. Abels Passed Away Sunday.
Marie Robinson ABELS, 69, daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. W. H. Robinson, passed away at her home Sunday morning at 9:15. Death was due to a heart attack.
She had been under the care of a specialist for more than four years. On May 2 her illness became acute. At that time she was hospitalized for about a week and had been
regaining her health and strength when struck by the fatal attack.
Mrs. Abels was a graduate of the Eudora schools. She graduated from the University of Kanas in 1919 and spent a number of years, both before and after her mariage, teaching school.
She was married to Edwin F. Abels on May 29, 1917, at her home in Eudora.
In 1923 the couple bought a newspaper at Humansville, Mo. and published the Star-Ledger there for three years. In 1926 they came to Lawrence and started the Lawrence Outlook the original name of which was the Douglas County Republican. They were assisted in this undertaking by a number of prominent Lawrence businessmen. She has been active in newspaper work through the years since that date. In recent years The Perry Mirror-McLouth Times were acquired and published.
Her membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution took her from Regent of the Lawrence Chapter to State Regent after which she was elected by the National Congress as Vice-President General of the National Society. She served with outstanding success in all of these offices. She traced her ancestory back to prior to the signing of the Magna Carta. Membership in the DAR meant a great deal more to Mrs. Abels than this fascinating hobby. Through the DAR, and the groups working with it, she kept in constant touch with the Communist threat to America. Her work gave her an opportunity to teach patriotism and the necessity for checking the communist movement. It was through this connection that she became a member of the Society of Magna Carta Dames, The New England Society, The Dames of the Court of Honor, Knights of the Roayl Horse Shoe and several others. Mrs. Abels was active in Republican state politics for many years and served as state president of the Kansas Womens Republican Club and several other state organizations.
She was a member of the Methodist Church taking an active part in church work for many years. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, the Beauceant, the White Shrine, the Topeka branch of National Pen Women and several other groups.
Surviving Mrs. Abels, in addition to her husband, are a daughter, Mrs. Betty Jean HAZLETT of Topeka and 2 sons, Allan Ashley and Stanton; and 2 brothers, John ROBINSON and Charley Robinson, both of Kansas City, Mo.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Cooper-Warren Chapel with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery.
