A life time resident of the Wenatchee Valley, Norma Hanson died August 15, 2006. She had lived at Highgate Assisted Living Home the last three years.

She was born at home on Ferry Street in 1921, to Bernie and Cenia Pace who had moved here from rural Kentucky in 1920, during the deadly influenza epidemic. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Wesley, in 1998; and siblings, Bill, Thelma, Joy, and Dick. She is survived by one brother, Cliff Pace of Wenatchee; two sons, Phil of Redmond, WA, and Paul of Brownsville, TX; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Her stories of growing up during the hardships of the Great Depression included the loss of two homes to fire, but also of a close knit family and community who shared and pulled together. She was a "bridgewalker" who graduated from Wenatchee High in 1939, and began working as school secretary in East Wenatchee the same year. She married in 1942, in San Francisco while Wes was stationed there and worked as a secretary on an Army base. She worked for nearly 30 years as a secretary in the Eastmont Schools, retiring in 1976. She especially enjoyed helping beginning teachers get started in their careers. She lived for 58 years in two different homes on Eastmont Avenue, both built by her father. She and Wes were "Winter Texans" during the 80's where they helped with their Texas grandchildren. She always enjoyed traveling, throughout the U.S. and Canada, and later to Alaska, Mexico, England, and Norway. She was a committed Christian, was baptized in the Columbia River, and attended the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church (now Living Hope Community Church) since age four. She served constantly in every area of church life and was a strong supporter of foreign missions. She was a patriotic member of the "Greatest Generation", actively supporting school and community endeavors, flying her flag on holidays, and enjoyed noting she was born the same year women won the right to vote. She was a Republican Party precinct official. In her later years, her greatest pleasures came from family, her Eastmont Avenue neighbors, cultivating her flower gardens, and her cat. She was a firm believer that her Wenatchee Valley was a little bit of heaven on earth and couldn't understand why anyone would want to live elsewhere.

Her Memorial Service will be held Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. August 18, 2006, at Telfords Chapel of the Valley in East Wenatchee.
