ROSS
- At Woodville, on the 5th September, Augustus H., the beloved husband of Mary Jane Ross; aged 36 years

Woodville Examiner, 8 Sep 1902
Obit
We deeply regret to record the death of Mr Augustus H. Ross, which took place at his residence, Ormond's Road, on Saturday evening after a long and painful illness. Some two months ago Mr Ross caught a chill which turned to pneumonia. Up to within a week before his death it was thought he would pull through, the doctor having great hopes of his ultimate recovery. A change took place last Sunday and though even then the worst was not feared, it was realised that it was only his remarkable vitality which kept him up.
The late Mr Ross came to Woodville with his father about twenty-five years ago and has resided in the district ever since. His genial disposition and his thorough goodness of heart made 'Gus' the friend of everyone with whom he came in contact. Happy-go-lucky, light-hearted and with a disposition always to look on the sunshiny side of life, his was a character not often met with and his death at the early age of 26 years will be keenly felt. We offer our sincerest sympathy to Mrs Ross and the seven little ones who are bereaved of a kind husband and father.
The funeral will leave the residence of the deceased on Ormond's Road to-morrow at two o;clock.
The deceased, having been a member of the Pahiatua Mounted Rifles, will be buried with full military honors. Instruction for the parade of the members of the Pahiatua Mounted Rifles, Woodville Rifles and Battalion Band will be found elsewhere.

THE LATE Mr ROSS
- An Impressive Funeral
The mortal remains of the late Mr Augustus Ross were laid in the Woodville Cemetery yesterday, in the presence of an immense concourse of people. The funeral cortege left the late residence of the deceased at two o'clock. The deceased, having been a corporal in the Pahiatua Mounted Rifles, was accorded a military funeral. The funeral procession was headed by a firing party of the Woodville Rifles, under Lieuts. Horne and Hartstone. Then followed the Ruahine Battalion band. Immediately in front ot the hearse the Woodville Rifles and deceased's comrades in the Mounted Corps and returned troopers marched. Several mounted men formed the escort and deceased's charger was led behind the hearse by Trooper Cotter. The cortege was an exceptionally large one, practically the whole town and district assembling to pay a last tribute of respect to a well-loved friend. The Band played the 'Dead March in Saul' along the line of route. The hearse was met at the cemetery by the Rev Mr Eccles, who conducted the solemn burial service of the Church of England. The coffin was carried by Quarter-Master Sergt. Medhurst, Sergts. Eccles and Stace and Troopers Mason, Riches and Cotter. As the coffin was lowered into the grace the Bugler sounded 'The Last Post.'
'Tis lonesome, ah, lonesome! in the evening
When the notes of 'The Last Post' resound

The muffled drum rolled out and the funeral salute sounded crisp and clear in the afternoon air and the concluding portion of the service was said. There was scarcely a dry eye in all that throng and many wept unrestrainedly.
Wreaths were placed on the grave from numerous friends, We regret that our list is far from complete as the cards became detached. The following are acknowledged:- The Pahiatua Mounted Rifles, the Woodville District Jockey Club, the A. & P. Society, Mr and Mrs Rosenberg and family, Mr and Mrs Peebles and family, Mr and Mrs Troup and family, Mrs Westoby, Mr and Mrs J. H. Harris and family, Mr and Mrs Pickering, Mrs and Miss Davies, Ruddick Bros., mr and Mrs Mason and family, the Railway Refreshment Room staff, 'Ethel and Maud', Mr and Mrs James Taylor, Mr and Mrs Loader, Mr and Mrs S. Blake and family, Miss Susie Alphors, Miss Nora Alphors, Mrs Doney, Mr and Mrs Geo, Peebles, Mr and Miss Cole and Capt. Bolton.
