Henry Peter Schmidt, 94, of Fredericks burg, died Thursday, Jan., 15, 2009, at Knopp Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 19, at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Schaetter Funeral Home with the Rev. Jarrell Sharp officiating. Interment followed in Greenwood Cemetery where military honors were accorded at graveside. Visitation was held Sunday evening at the funeral home.
Schmidt was born May 3, 1914, in Blanco county, the son of Ernst Schmidt and Meta Herbort Schmidt. He married Ruby Meta Alma Herbort on April 11, 1942, in Fredericksburg. She preceded him in death.
A veteran of the United States Army Air Force, Schmidt served from Sept. 8, 1942, until Nov. 1, 1945, achieving the rank of Staff sergeant. He was awarded numerous medal and citations for his service.
Over the years, he was a farmer and rancher and also a member of the Barons Creek Shooting Club, participating in the yearly Gillespie County Schuetzenfests. He was crowned centerfire champion two times in 1964 and again in 1968.
Schmidt is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dwight and Carol Schmidt of Fredericksburg; six grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and a sister, Mrs. Clara Herbort Bell of Fredericksburg.
In addition to his wife and parents, Schmidt was preceded in death by two sister and tow brothers, including Olga, Mrs. Arthur Lorenz; Estella, Mrs. Earle Summers; Alex Schmidt, and Chester G. Schmidt.
Memorials may be made to the Gillespie County Schuetzenbund, the National Rifle Association or to the charity of choice.
Pallbearers included Steve Schmidt, Tiffany Seyffert, Matthew Seyffert, Cameron Culver, Michael Schmidt and Brooke Seyffert.
