LAWRENCE - At Woodville, on the 19th August, James Lawrence; aged 61 years. Waipawa Mail please copy.
Mr James Lawrence, a very old settler, died this morning from the effects of a paralytic stroke. He leaves a large family.
Waipawa Mail, 20 Aug 1901
The late Mr Lawrence was an old and greatly esteemed resident of Waipawa. When residing here he was an enthusiastic member of the Waipawa Brass Band, from its formation until his removal to Woodville and the old members of that institution will regret to hear of 'Daddy' Lawrence's demise. The deceased leaves a wife and family of six, who have the sympathy of many Waipawa residents in the loss they have sustained. The cause of death was paralysis.
On account of the death of Mr James Lawrence, the cantata "Daughter of Moab," which was to be given in the Wesleyan Church on Thursday under Mr Lawrence's conductorship, has been postponed until Thursday, 29th inst. There will be no further practice until Friday next.
Woodville Examiner, 21 Aug 1901
Funeral The funeral of the late Mr James Lawrence which took place this afternoon was largely attended. The Woodville Band headed the cortege playing Handel's Dead March.
