Woodville Examiner, 25 Nov 1985
We are glad to hear that Mrs Gupwell, of Woodville, who was a short time ago sent to Rotorua for treatment, is already much improved in health. The Ladies' Benevolent Society are much indebted to Mr Hall, M.H.R., through whose kind exertions a free bed was obtained for Mrs Gupwell in the Government Sanatorium at Rotorua.

Ladies Benevolent Society
.. In the case of Mrs Gupwell, she has lived for years in this district and we were very glad to help her and to be the means of giving her relief. I would really like to see her sent away again this winter if it were possible.

Woodville Examiner, 9 Aug 1901
Again at 11 o'clock the fire-bell was rung vigorously. This turned out to be Mr Thacker's house on his village section on the Palmerston Road on fire. As the house had been empty for some considerable time, it is supposed that a swagger set fire to it. The house was completely burned down and the neighbours just managed to save Mrs Gupwell's house which adjoins.

Woodville Examiner, 17 Jan 1902
At the meeting of the H. B. Land Board on Wednesday. on the application of R. E. Manisty, the Board agreed to allow Mrs Gupwell and Mrs James Isles to reside on the sections which had been occupied by their late husbands.

GUPWELL
- On November 20th, at Woodville, Ann Gupwell, beloved mother of Mrs C. Beech, of Ashburton; in her 67th year. At rest

Woodville Examiner, 22 Nov 1907
We regret to hear of the death of Mrs Gupwell, of the Palmerston road, who passed away yesterday morning. The deceased lady had been a helpless invalid for many years, but was often to be seen, till very lately, in the town in her bath-chair. Her husband died several years ago and she has been residing with her daughter, Mrs Matthew Smith. In spite of her illness, she was always grateful for visits paid to her and those who paid them never felt that their doing so had been pains taken in vain. Although so feeble and helpless, she will be much missed and we offer our sympathy to her family. The funeral was conducted to-day by the Rev T. T. Thomas, of Dannevirke.

.. relevant extracts taken from link: Barron Gardner was charged with a breach of 'The Medical Practitioners Act" in that he did falsely announce that he was a doctor of medicine .. Mary Smith, wife of Matthew Smith, labourer, deposed that her mother, Mrs Gupwell, lived with her. Remembered Mr Gardner calling at their house in May. Prior to the visit a boy had left a card. The boy said "Dr Barron Gardner leave his card." The next morning Mr Gardner called. He talked to Mrs Gupwell about her rheumatism and said he could cure her. He prescribed for her and sent her some medicine down in bottles. He charged her £5 for the medicine. Witness and her mother called on Mr Gardner at the Club Hotel the same day as the boy left the card and Mr Gardner called at their house the next day. Defendant told them he had been a specialist for 35 years. He sounded Mrs Gupwell with some instrument one end of which he placed on her heart and the other to his ear. He then sent the medicine down, which Mrs Gupwell took. She felt very much better inwardly but her joints were no better. Paid the £5 and got a receipt (produced). After Mr Gardner left Woodville witness wrote to him at Pahiatua and got a reply (produced). When defendant called he was nicely dressed just as he was in court that day.
