GREENING
- At the Waipukurau Hospital, on the 28th September, Ellen, the beloved wife of Joseph Greening, Pinfold Road; aged 58 years

Another well-known resident of Woodville passed away in the person of Mrs Greening, wife of Mr Joseph Greening of Pinfold Road. The deceased lady, who was fifty-eight years of age, was being treated in the Waipawa District Hospital for hear disease.

Woodville Examiner, 30 Sep 1904
The body of the late Mrs Greening was brought to Woodville to-day and interred at the Cemetery. The funeral was a private one.

Wairarapa Daily Times, 1 Oct 1904
Mr C. Hambling, one of Woodville's oldest settlers, died at 'Oxford Farm' on Tuesday last. He leaves a large family to mourn his loss. He will be well remembered by travellers from Napier in the early days when the train only came as far as Makatoku, as the owner of 'Skylark' and 'Darkie; two horses which drew the brake up hill and down dale to the call of their master's voice. Mr Levi Hambling, of this town, is a son of deceased.
Mrs Greening, of Pinfold-road, passed away on the same day of heart disease. Both funerals took place on Thursday.

In March 1906 Joseph was still living in Woodville when he received the full age pension of £26
Woodville Examiner, 16 Sep 1907, Close Shave For Mr Greening
At the Court last Wednesday, before Mr James, S.M., old-age pensions were renewed to the following persons:- Jane Scaife £26, Charles Stacey £14, William Gillham £16, William Hope £26.
Joseph Greening, an old-age pensioner appeared before the Magistrate to show cause why his pension certificate should not be cancelled. Constable Brosnahan showed that Greening was wasting his pension in intoxicating liquor and that he was twice convicted for drunkenness during August last. The Magistrate seriously considered whether he would not cancel the pensioner's certificate altogether. He said that pensioner's conduct tended to bring discredit on a number of deserving persons who were getting old-age pensions, as the public who contributed the money were very quick in noticing those who, like Greening, were wasting it in drink. Constable Brosnahan said the pensioner had no other means of living and no friends to assist him and if his pension were stopped he would have to get charitable aid. The Magistrate severely lectured Greening and ordered him to forfeit one month's instalment of his pension and that some suitable person be appointed to draw his pension in the future.
