Born at the very end of the 19th century, Marie Beavert lived in Louisiana, Oklahoma and Arkansas for most of her life. There were six children in her family, five girls and one boy. When Marie was only 5 years old, her father died after falling off a ladder at work. Left without many resources, her mother Arlena moved with the younger children to the brand-new Masonic Home in Batesville, Arkansas. They eventually ended up in Hot Springs and Arlena lived there for the remainder of her life. Marie briefly worked as a telephone operator with some of her sisters, and when she was just 18 years old, married Willie Chachere. They had three daughters, but the youngest died when she was just a few months old. At some point around 1925, Marie divorced Willie. Their daughters Arlene and Elizabeth went to live with their Chachere grandparents who lovingly raised them in Kinder, Louisiana, where both lived their entire lives and raised their own families.

In 1927, Marie married Roy Lee Pickens in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They lived in Oklahoma for several years and had 3 sons, Roy Jr., Joe and Jim. By 1938, they had moved to Hot Springs, Arkansas. Roy worked at the Hot Springs Mill Work company, owned by Marie's brother-in-law. In 1943, Roy enlisted in the Navy and served all over the Pacific theater during World War II. Released from the Navy in November of 1945, Roy returned to his job at the Mill Works. Marie went to nursing school and graduated in March 1948, and then worked as a licensed practical nurse in the office of Dr. Proctor at the Medical Arts Building and later for Dr. Cecil Parkerson, who delivered one of her grandchildren.

Their sons all served in the military before moving into their own marriages and having children. In 1960, after learning that Marie's daughter Elizabeth had tragically lost her beloved husband Buster Marcantel to a sudden heart attack, they moved to Kinder, Louisiana to help her care for the four children she already had and the one that was on the way. Daddy Roy and Granny, as they were known to all of the grandchildren, lived in a house next door to Elizabeth and Buster's department store, Marcantels.

In the early 70s, Roy was in and out of the hospital, eventually succumbing to lung cancer in March of 1973. Marie lived another 11 and a half years, in a nursing home during her later years, and died in November of 1984.

At the time of her death, "Granny" had 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
