Enlisted as a private on 19 September 1861, in Co. G, 1st Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. Promoted to corporal; wounded on 08 October 1862 at Chaplin Hills, Kentucky. Received a disability discharge on 10 February 1863.

Edwin's father was Stephen Oliver, Jr., who was massacred in Surprise Valley, Modoc County, California, about 1861.
