In 1885 Edward was a farmer, employed by the Gear's (of Gear Meats), managing their land in Porirua. They remained in Porirua until the early 1890's where Maria was enrolled at Porirua School in 1891. By the late 1890s the family had moved to Hamua, near Ekatahuna. From his farm Edward supplied Wellington butchers with the 'finest pigs'

The death occurred at his residence Eketahuna on Tuesday of Mr Edward Goodban, an old resident of the district and one who was well-known and highly respected. Deceased was formerly farming at Hamua, but in recent years he had lived in Eketahuna.

The family of the late Mr E. Goodman, Mesdames Swan (Levin), Yeomans (Greytown) and Mr E. Goodman (Pahautanui), have been in Eketahuna owing to his illness and subsequent death. The funeral cortege to Woodville was followed by a number of Eketahuna sympathisers and the pall bearers were Messrs W. Olsen, Loban, J. Jewitt, Bath, Hornblow and Butcher. A large number of beautiful floral tributes covered the coffin.
